How To Shoot Truly Artistc Glamour Images

8 December 2009

Human body has always been a popular theme to depict in fine arts. However, it’s far from easy to shoot aesthetically flawless pictures without falling into profanity – so how can the latter be avoided? I would like offer you some general insight on how artistry can be achieved in shooting nude portraits.

Nude photographs first of all serves an artistic purpose, and so it is meant to create an appropriate impression – that of aesthetics rather than “oh, what a pretty lass!” kind of rapture. However unusual they may appear, the chief goal of a good nude portrait is to evoke thoughts and deliver spiritual pleasure. Let us turn away from ethereal and boring theory, though, and get down to practice!

Here you find 7 techniques and pieces of advice to guide you through the basics of nude Glamour Photographs and provide some valuable insight as well as priceless mindset.

  • It is important to feel the border between artistry and profanity: as a photographer, you need to pursue the former, not the latter. Make emphasis on body shapes and texture. Unless you know what you’re doing, refrain from depicting genitals – not many photographers know how to make them look appropriate on a nude glamour portrait. Rely on your artistic taste to decide what will look great and what should be avoided – it is a more reliable criterion than strict rules of glamour photography;
  • Don’t overload your model with trinkets and jewelry – when it comes to nude photography, human body must dominate the shot. Think small, sophisticated and well-balanced items that could add some glamorous and beguiling touch to your concept;
  • Refrain from using hot lights during a nude photo session, unless you want to turn it into some kind of a desert. Cold lights consume less electricity, create less heat and prove to be more flexible when it comes to studio lighting. You would also want to obtain some soft-boxes to get more diffused light. In fact, softer lighting always contributes to the atmosphere of your nude portraits, so don’t disregard with this opportunity;
  • Watch out for the proportions: shooting from too high or too low might make your model look either a long-legged giraffe or a humpty-dumpty. You don’t want any of that, do you?
  • Unleash your artistic nature. Experimenting with poses, light and surroundings can result in very unexpected and original variations;
  • Take as many shots as possible, will you? I mean it – to call your session successful, you need lots of material to look through. No good photographer takes less than a thousand of pictures per session – just to have a vast choice;
  • Establish a connection with your model. She is more than merely a model, but your best friend and a co-author. She is not simply posing nude but co-creating. If your model feels uncomfortable, you won’t get anywhere – even if you’re Helmut Newton!

It’s never a piece of cake to be a nude portraitist, nor is to shoot Glamour Photography. Yet you can achieve a lot if you keep practicing and pushing on. As they say, with one step you can start a trip of thousand miles! In the case of glamour artists one flash is enough.
