Modern digital cameras are elevating the world of home and professional photography. However, just like older traditional cameras utilize film, digital cameras utilize a camera memory card. Making the best use of memory cards can have a big impact on your enjoyment of digital photography.

Capacity of a camera memory card is the amount of data that it can store and is measured in MB (megabytes) or GB (gigabytes). Capacity is indicated on the card, the higher the figure the more room there is for digital data storage. Larger memory files or larger capacity camera memory cards of 512 megabytes or 1 gigabyte are recommended if you’re planning on working with RAW images on a regular basis.

RAW files can be as large as 20 megabytes in size, while high quality JPEGS typically are 1 to 4 megabytes in size. Shooting JPEGS at a high quality setting is a good idea for both sharing great photos or having a quality image to work with when editiing at a later time.

Diversifying your data with using multiple camera memory cards is highly recommended so that you don't risk loss of your images if your card were to be lost or corrupted.

512 megabyte of memory or more for your digital camera's safe storage of your images is recommended. For most cameras, don’t consider a card smaller than 512 MB, which can hold from up to 100 to 200 JPEG images, depending on the image content and your individual digital camera settings.

The higher the resolution of the camera, the lower the available space is for for images that the memory can hold. You can determine the size of the camera memory card that you need by determining how many images you want it to be able to store or to save before transferring, and what resolution you will be using for your cameras photos.

Commercial digital cameras can use SD memory cards or Micro SD cards with an SD adpater as well, so if they have a cell phone or GPS as well, this size of memory card can be used for mulitple devices.

Professional digital cameras commonly referred to as SLR’s or DSLR’S use either SD cards or compact flash digital camera memory cards. These cameras can create high quality photos at a fast pace, many photographers utilize a compact flash card with fast write and read speeds for high mega pixel shots. So if a photographer is shooting quickly, a high performance compact flash card will process and store these images without delay.
