DSLR cameras have brought pro quality photography gear to the masses. But it is important to remember that a pro quality camera is only part of what it takes to take incredible photographs. You also need to know how to make best use of your SLR camera and that can be a bit more complex with a DSLR camera than with a point and type camera.

I believe far more important than understanding the technical stuff is having an artistic eye. You need to develop a good sense of what will make a good photo. A good example of this kind of “eye” can be seen when looking closely at these Beautiful Pictures by one of the best photographers.

From personal experience I recommend a Canon Rebel XTi Digital SLR in particular. IIt is a great Digital SLR camera that has worked for me without any problems for approximately three years now. It is also rather inexpensive by the cost standards of high quality cameras. Of course you should know that those standards are quite high, it is about $725 even without a lens!

As you educate yourself more on the subject of high quality cameras you will find that the lens is very important. If you are used to point and clicks then you are probably used to thinking that the megapixel count is the most important thing but that is not the case with DSLRs at all.

With high quality cameras, the lens is what makes the largest difference in the quality of your photographs. Really the topic of lenses is too deep for me to cover in this article, I simply want to make you aware of the importance of lenses and that if you want to get really serious about photography you will need to look into the topic more deeply.

Just like with all other skills, you will only become a better photographer with plenty of practice. You will need to read all about the art of photography and then you will need to take tons of photos experiencing for yourself all of what you have learned!
