The Number Of Technologies Buried In Modern Digital Cameras Is Amazing
I’ve bought EasyShare cameras in the past, and they all seem to experience the same problem with the mode selection wheel. It never seems to stay put. Every time you slip the M753 into a case (not included by the way) you have to make sure you didn’t accidentally turn it own. Otherwise, that’s a sure fire way to churn thru batteries. Even using the camera, you’ll find it annoying to have to check the mode wheel, to make sure it hasn’t slipped. There nothing worse than thinking your taking a still picture, when the EasyShare is actually in movie mode.
The Canon Digital Rebel XTi or the Nikon D40 are good starters around $600 in this category. If you seem like the passionately intense type, and have an endless pocket book, you may as well just knock your self out, and get the Canon EOS 5D ($2000 + lenses). Your probably the type that’s going to end up with one eventually. You may as well just skip the appetizers and get right to the main course.
Hopefully, your not looking for great image quality with a digital camera in the sub $100 price range. The C613 tends to take dark and grainy pictures when using the flash. Your likely to find a gray tinge to most of your flash photos as well. Part of the reason for this, is a much too low powered flash. Outdoor pictures in perfect sunlight should turn out much better. However, I could say the same thing for a $10 disposable camera I bought from the corner convenience store. This canon powershot pro series s3 and this point and shoot digital camera reviews 2009 should help with what’s the best digital camera to buy.
The good news, is there really isn’t much too worry about. There has been so much money and interest thrown at the digital camera industry in the last few years the it really has evolved into almost a commodity market. What I mean by that, is that for the most part the quality and reliability of most digital cameras is pretty common across a give price range regardless of manufacturer. Still sound confusing? How about this explanation . . . no matter what camera you buy, your chances are pretty darn good of getting a great product.
The $50 to $100 range is getting quite affordable for anyone, but there are sacrifices to be made in image quality and features. The Kodak EasyShare C613 still has a respectable 6.2MP and 3x zoom. A perennial best seller, and backed by one of the oldest camera manufacturers in the business. The Nikon Coolpix L11, and Canon Powershot A460 are worthy contenders to look at here as well.
With SLR, you get complete control over all camera settings. Although many do include auto settings to ease the newbie SLR photographers learning curve. In addition SLR cameras have interchangeable lenses. Meaning you have a plethora of choices for shooting all kinds of shots from macro, to landscape, to wide angle to sports. The Canon Digital Rebel XTi and the Nikon D40 are both popular and well rated cameras in this category.
Smaller sized camera designs are very portable, but usually affect ease of use and image quality in negative ways. The smaller a camera is, the smaller the controls are, which makes them harder to use. Single control buttons and wheels are often used for multiple functions which can increase user confusion. Smaller cameras often mean, that features like viewfinders get left off in the effort to add bigger LCD screens. Smaller often means zoom lenses are less powerful, and overall lens quality suffers. The most successful small sized cameras I like are the Canon SD1000 Digital Elph, and the Olympus Stylus 790SW.
If that’s a problem for you, then stick with the point and shoots, or keep your eyes open for the next few months as Canon and other manufacturers start to roll out SLR cameras with something called “Live View”.
